Parents and Guardians,

On August 29, JES began reading, math, and multi-sensory interventions. Each year, teachers and instructional aides use test data, classroom observations, and basic skill screeners to identify students who need extra instruction. This year, we have also used district and state skill screeners to identify students who may demonstrate dyslexic tendencies. If students failed 2 out of 4 screeners, they will receive multi-sensory instruction from Mrs. Amy Goff. During our parent meeting last Thursday, September 1, we explained that public schools cannot diagnose dyslexia. We do not know if you students actually have dyslexia. Our staff is simply looking for red flags, notifying parents about our concerns, and providing research based interventions to help improve phonics, reading comprehension, and spelling. We understand and appreciate your concern. We will be glad to meet and discuss individual concerns at your convenience. This week, we will post the Powerpoint used during the parent meeting. We are also planning additional meetings for late September. Please contact me or Kandye Jones for additional information.
